Resumo:

The transition to adulthood is highly determined by social context. The overlap between the student role and other social roles (such as parenthood or work) can bring important sanctions since it compromises the acquisition of human capital causing dual-role individuals to have lower levels of education and consequently, poorer life opportunities. Using an unique longitudinal panel with nationally representative data for Brazil (PNAD 2012 to 2018), we investigate the transition to adulthood (from school to formal and informal jobs, domestic work and childcare) to people ages 14 to 24. We also investigate the effects of the economic crisis on the duration of the Life Free of Work and Care (LFWC). We find that there are strong statification in LFWC according to gender, race and SES. Besides, the economic crises has exacerbated the dfferences, contributing to a higher vulnerability of the poorest groups, women and non-white individuals.
